  • IN HONOR OF SERVICE DOG

Service Dog For those who have made a visit to McCarthy Middle School, you may have been fortunate enough to meet Romer, a golden Labrador Retriever, who has been in service to math teacher Thomas Gallagher since 2015. In addition to Romer’s service to Mr. Gallagher, he is responsible for spreading joy to the entire McCarthy community on a daily basis. Mr. Gallagher releases Romer to spend time with students who choose to visit his classroom during lunch. Romer is also a frequent visitor of the Main Office, where he is adored by staff.

Zachary Friedland, a young composer who received his training at the University of Rhode Island, Longy School of Music, and The Ohio State University, has recently signed on with Woodson Percussion & Publishing, LLC (ASCAP). A personal friend and colleague of Allison Lacasse, one of the two co-directors of the band program, Zachary suggested the idea of commissioning a piece for one of the bands. A group can commission a new piece of music at any time, and there does not necessarily have to be a story behind it. However, it was obvious to the McCarthy Band directors that Romer would be an inspirational subject for this new work.

Says Friedland, “I love writing music that has special meaning for both the musicians and the audience. When Ms. Lacasse told me about the school’s service dog, Romer, it sounded like a really fun idea that everyone would enjoy and a special thing for this community. I set out to write a piece that was as joyous and celebratory as possible. Something very uplifting. As someone who grew up with a dog, it was easy to relate to the feeling of joy and love they bring to everyone they come in contact with.”

Romer has been trained to hold a maraca in his mouth, and sometimes comes out to the lobby and “sits in” with the McCarthy Lobby Band on Fridays. Once Zachary heard this, he composed a prominent maraca part in the music.

The world premiere of the new piece will take place at the McCarthy Band Spring Concert at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, May 20, 2019, at the Carl J. Rondina Performing Arts Center at Chelmsford High School (200 Richardson Road, North Chelmsford, MA, 01863). This is a free concert and is open to all, including Romer, who will be in attendance with his maraca in tow!
