BOKS is a before school physical education program offered at all 4 Chelmsford Public Elementary Schools.
In the event that Chelmsford Public Schools is CLOSED or there is a DELAYED OPENING due to inclement weather – BOKs will be cancelled.
We are pleased to announce BOKS, a before school physical activity program, will be at ALL Chelmsford Public Elementary Schools this year. BOKS prepares children for a day of learning and is an important step in helping children appreciate the benefits of exercise and healthy choices that will last a lifetime. BOKS was inspired by Dr. John Ratey’s book “Spark”. Dr. Ratey, of Harvard Medical School, states that “exercise is the single most powerful tool that we have to optimize the function of our brains.” Classes are filled with team-oriented games, plenty of opportunity for play and fun!
BOKS Class (sample lesson on back)
•35 minutes long
•Fun warm-up game or movement drills
•Running activity, relay races, obstacle courses and strength movements
•Fun group game(s)
•Cool Down and a BOKS Bit, a nutrition component of the program
What is the cost for attending BOKS?
The fee is $45 for each session which consists of 25 classes. Checks can be made out to the Town of Chelmsford/CommEd and sent in with your registration form.
Is there transportation for BOKS?
Parents will be responsible for transporting their children to school. Children who attend the Extended Day before school program are eligible to enroll and participate; the BOKS fee is additional.

BOKS SAMPLE LESSON:
8:10- 8:15- Arrival and Morning Meeting
Drop off, check in, receive color designation, put backpacks in designated grade area
Review appropriate BOKS behavior and safety
Remind kids about the BOKS Kid of the Week. Briefly state what the Skill of the Week is.
Review Class Agenda
8:15- 8:25 – Warm- up/Running Related Activity
8:25- 8:35 – Skill of the Week
Skill of the week: Sit Ups! Why? Works abdominal muscles and posture.
Introduce sit ups and demonstrate the proper form, discuss 3 key points of performance. Have kids partner up and practice 10 sit ups. Stations: for 1 minute each
1. Sit ups
2. Jump rope
3. Hula Hoop
4. Jumping Jacks
8:35- 8:40 – Game
8:40- 8:45 – Cool Down/ Nutrition talk
BOKS Bits (Nutrition discussion)
Have the kids line up, take a deep breath and dismiss by groups to go to class.
